Getting Started with Knitting

Quilting and Knitting

Article by Diane Palmer

Learn to knit, and get those creative juices flowing… I can still remember the moment I learned to knit. I was 6 years old, and my grandma sat down with me while my mother was busy with my new baby brother.

She taught me to cast on, and knit, and I was so excited I took my knitting everywhere.. it was all uneven and horrid, but I was excited that I had learned something new, and still love to knit to this day!

I am left handed, and always found many crafts hard to do because of it, such as crochet. But knitting can be done easily whether you are left handed or right handed.

Learning to knit as a child is a great way, but if you never did learn to knit, and would like to, then why not get started now!

Take it in little steps. Learn to cast on one day, and then learn to do the basic garter stitch the next day, and PRACTICE. That is the biggest part of knitting, is practicing. Once you have mastered the garter stitch, then you can try to purl, which is going through the back of the stitch.

Once you have mastered basic knitting, then you will need to learn to cast off. Continue to practice and make lots of blocks of knitting. (you can always make them into a quilt later!).

There are many books, ebooks, and videos on the market that will teach you how to knit, learning from an experienced knitter sitting right beside you, will still always be the best way, like my grandma did. But the next best thing I feel is a video. One where you get a real good close-up of what the teacher is doing, not something far away.

With a video, you can play it over and over again, and if you sit there with your needles and yarn, you will get this new skill. Its good for the brain to learn new crafts and skills, it gets the creativity flowing and keeps the brain alert.

It is never too late, and you are never too old to learn something new! Try it, knitting is good for relieving stress, as many men are finding. Knitting has become popular amongst celebrities and many professional men.. to help with stress and become creative.

So, get yourself some knitting needles and yarn, and maybe a basic pattern to get started with, once you learn your basic skills.

Try it, you may like it, so watch a good video and learn to knit…learn to knit video

Knitted Kippah – Basics To Follow While Knitting

Quilting and Knitting

The term Kippah is used to refer to a skull cap in Hebrew. It is used by Jewish boys and men and is kind of a skull cap. In some conservative Jewish communities, one can even come across both men and women wearing a kippah. It is a custom amongst the Jewish community that men should cover their heads while offering their prayers or while they are doing their lessons in a Synagogue or Torah. There is a huge demand for a knitted kippah and is often knitted by the members of the community. At times the kippah is knitted using interesting patterns and you cannot help but admire the designs. The kippahis usually is of one color. It can, however, be knitted in the colors of a team, colors that symbolize a particular tradition or are symbolic of any thing significant.

There are a number of materials that are required for knitting a kippah. You can use wool, yarn cotton and linen for this purpose. It is advisable to use worsted or a heavy yarn so that you can easily spot the stitches. You will also need a circular needle that is approximately 16 inches long. If you are keen to knit a particular pattern, then you can use contrasting yarns. A tapestry needle or crochet hook can be used for stitching along with stitch markers.

While knitting the kippah , you need to do 16 stitches in 20 rows for the gauge. This will make a kippah that measures 17 inches in its circumference and is 4 inches deep. It is important to consider the way you knit the stitches. If you intend them to be loose, then you need to use a small needle. On the other hand, if you want the stitches to be tight, it is better to use a larger needle. The fabric that you are using for the kippot should be firm but you should see to it that the material does not end up been too stiff. All these things ensure that the knitted kippah not only serves its purpose but also lasts long.

Knitting Stitches and Buying Knitting Materials

Buying Knitting Needles

There are factors to consider when buying knitting needles. This would include the:

? Size
? Style or Type
? Shaft
? Interchangeable Nature
? Material

When it comes to the size of the knitting needle, you need to consider their diameters. They usually range from 0 to 15 (smallest to largest). In Europe, their knitting needles are measured in millimeters instead of diameter. To be on the safe side and so that you won’t have problems while doing knitting projects, just buy needles of different sizes.

As for the type of knitting needle, you will find a range of designs that serve distinct purposes. This would include circular, straight and double-pointed needle designs. If you want to do some flat knitting stitches then go for straight knitting needles. Just the same, if you want to do some round knitting, you can use circular or double-pointed knitting needles. The only difference between circular and double-pointed needles is that the latter is only utilized for smaller projects like socks and gloves.
The shaft is another factor to consider in buying knitting needles. The usual measurement for the shat is 9 inches to 14 inches. For your knitting stitches, it is a good idea to buy a long shaft. However, make sure it is not too long or you will have a hard time using it.

For the interchangeable nature of your knitting needle, you will be choosing from various circular needles with different sizes of points. There are also those that snap together and those that you can screw on.

For the material of your knitting needles, your options are:

? Plastic
? Metal
? Wood
? Bamboo
? Glass

Keep in mind that each type of material for knitting needles has a different feel. A good suggestion is to try them out first and see if you like the feel. Base your final choice on your personal preference.

Buying Knitting Yarns

Depending on your project, there are different types of yarns you can use. There are cotton yarns and wools. These yarns also come in various colors. The thing is – if you are a beginner in knitting, it is best that you practice with cheap yarns first. This way, the moment you realize that you don’t have the feel for knitting; you won’t have any regrets about spending too much money on buying yarns and needles. Below are some tips you can benefit from:

? Choose simple and light colored yarns since they can contrast your needles
? Start with cotton yarns since they are easy to use
? You can also use variegated or pile yarns
? Gauge first before you start buying yarn
? If you are a beginner, start with only one to two balls of yarn
? Always take into consideration what and who you are doing the project for. Even the climate where the person who will be using the knitted project is essential.
? Choosing colors can be confusing at first. Just keep in min that when they are all rolled up, they look interesting; however, once you use them in your knitting project, they may look different. Just follow the mentioned suggestions on the yarn band.
? There are yarns that are better than others, just make sure they are suitable for the project you are making.
Always check the dye lot numbers when buying yarn of the same color. There are those that appear the same but may have subtle differences in the dye lots.
